    November 28 2023

French software developer Caldera has announced the release of the latest version of CalderaRIP, its award-winning RIP program for large-format digital printing & cutting. Starting October 2023, users will be able to upgrade their RIP to Version 17 in order to experience the full range of new features and improvements. Highlights of this new Version include the official support of macOS Sonoma, the integration of Adobe PDF Print Engine 6.2, more than 30 new drivers, and an extended range of new features to facilitate colour management, printing and cutting tasks.

According to Arnaud Fabre, Head of Product at Caldera, “CalderaRIP remains at the forefront of PDF performance with the integration of the latest version of Adobe PDF Print Engine. This integration not only ensures compatibility with Adobe Creative Suite’s evolution, but also guarantees precise rendering for all PDF files. As always, our users can rely on Caldera’s stability and high performance to deliver perfect results, streamline their processes and meet the challenges of a rapidly changing industry.”

Colour is paramount in digital printing, and Version 17 brings an array of powerful colour management features to help users deliver the best possible results. With this new version, users can share their spot colour libraries, a highly requested feature that significantly expedites the setup of new workstations. Within EasyMedia, Caldera’s colour management module, users gain the ability to select the formula for measuring colour distances, ensuring the utmost accuracy for a wide range of substrates. Moreover, they can enable the Auto- Smoothing option, effectively improving linearization curves and eliminating color management inaccuracies. In addition, Caldera continues to provide official access to spot colour libraries, including Pantone, RAL and HKS, simplifying the process of achieving precise brand colours. With Version 17, all users can enjoy the latest additions of PANTONE Solid Coated V5 and Solid Uncoated V5 for an even more comprehensive colour palette.

In Version 17, CalderaCare subscribers are in for a treat with an exclusive range of new features. Users with a CalderaCare subscription will now be granted one InkPerformer license for one printer, a resourceful solution that can reduce ink consumption by up to 35%, thereby significantly cutting down production costs and improving margins.

Furthermore, Caldera introduces its own REST API, enabling seamless integration of CalderaRIP with third-party applications such as webshops or ERP software. The REST API paves the way for more efficient job submission and improved job cost-tracking. In addition, the bicubic resampling feature has been incorporated in CalderaRIP, allowing operators to rescale images without pixelation issues, resulting in sharper and more detailed output. The SmartImport & PrintProof features also remain exclusive to CalderaCare subscribers— and with Version 17, users can leverage the ‘repeat_y’ metadata within SmartImport to set the desired number of vertical pattern repetitions, opening the door for automated wallpaper production.

Samin Sarkar, General Manager at Caldera, says “Caldera continues to push the boundaries of digital printing technology, and this latest Version shows our commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction. With its array of new features and enhanced performance, users can expect improved efficiency, precision, and creative possibilities.”

    November 28 2023

D3, a subsidiary of the Durst Group, unveiled its Micro-Particle Jetting printing technology at Formnext 2023, demonstrating advancements in high-performance ceramics manufacturing. D3's LABII printing system allows direct printing of water-based, highly concentrated suspensions with almost any particle size and distribution. Post-sintering, complex and dense components are formed that are not currently producible using any existing method.

Stefan Waldner, Chief Product Officer of D3-AM GmbH: "Material Jetting, from a theoretical standpoint, represents the most promising technology in additive manufacturing as it enables the construction of objects drop by drop, voxel by voxel. By overcoming material compatibility restrictions, our MPJ-technology paves the way for the production of previously deemed impossible components."

Formnext witnessed substantial interest and engagement at D3's booth, leading to dynamic discussions and the initiation of multiple projects for e.g. the development of new materials, exploration of applications, sample creation, component inquiries, and specific machine inquiries. Thick-walled components and those made out of Sintered Silicon Carbide (SSiC) attracted significant attention, with experts praising D3‘s showcased gyroid structure as the "best component ever printed out of SSiC".

The success at Formnext 2023 underscores D3's commitment to advancing ceramics manufacturing, leveraging the Durst Group's expertise in digital printing and production technologies.

Christoph Gamper, CEO and co-owner of Durst Group: "With our presence at Formnext with the D3 LABII system, we are starting a new chapter at Durst: Material Jetting. The trade show has clearly shown that we are onwards in the premier class of materials - ceramics - and we look forward to scaling the printing systems, processes, and materials to open up a world of possibilities."

    November 22 2023

Vibrant, exciting, and a comprehensive look at what the modern sign shop can deliver with the right technology. That’s the best way to describe Currie Group’s exciting Sydney demonstration centre, and the Sign & Display by Appointment event held to mark its opening.

Over several days, business owners were invited to see the latest in wide-format print technology and applications courtesy of the EFI, Canon, and HP print solutions, with live demonstrations taking place. Visitors could discuss their needs and see the solutions that Currie Group deliver to the sign & display markets, as well as commercial print, labels, and packaging.

The demonstration centre, located in Macquarie Park, is decked out in vibrant graphics – all printed on Orafol adhesive media - plays host to a huge array of sprinted samples than span almost all the print industry. There’s almost nothing that can’t be produced by the three machines on display. All the graphics used to decorate the demonstration centre where actually printed using the EFI Pro 30h hybrid LED and the Canon Colorado M Series, using matte and gloss graphics which the M Series can print in the same run.

Paul Whitehead, Business Unit manager – Sign & Display, Currie Group, told guests that, “Currie Group is excited to bring these printers here to our Sydney demonstration centre, with many clients booking to see the technology on display, including the new Canon Colorado M-Series which is making its debut in NSW.”

In recent times, Currie Group has made a significant investment if the wide-format sector by partnering with market leader EFI, then following that up with the recent announcement of the partnership with Canon Production Printing Australia.

Ashley Playford-Browne, Currie Group Business Development Manager – Sign & Display, was also available to show guests through the centre.

“We are proud to be able to bring the latest print technology to sign and display specialists in the Sydney market, and from across NSW,” said Ashley. “Each customer has different needs, and we look to address those needs with a range of tailored options.”

“We have had a lot of customers come through the centre, and have many appointments made for the following weeks. There’s been an interesting mix of new and existing clients. Many have our HP Indigo presses, but there are also many new customers looking to branch out and expand what they can deliver. Which is why the print solutions that the EFI Pro 30h hybrid and Canon Colorado M series are of real interest. They are exceptional technology and extremely versatile. You only need look around the demonstration centre to see what the printers are capable of.”

The capabilities of the machines were certainly enough for Melbourne-based Fleetmark who have been the first company to purchase a Canon Colorado M series from Currie Group.

“Fleetmark has purchased the first Canon Colorado M5W under the Currie Group banner to complement their truck curtain business in Melbourne,” said Paul. “They also use two EFI machines, so with this investment in the Colorado, it brings everything under one roof from the perspective of service and support.”

“Fleetmark has an exceptional reputation in vehicle graphics, specifically for their truck curtains and vehicle graphics. Currie Group have done a lot of work with Fleetmark with their existing EFI portfolio. They have seen the Colorado technology and realise the benefits the print system can deliver to complement the work they are doing and to address their increased workload.”

Another purchase that was announced during the event was the sale of a Canon Arizona 135GT UV curable flatbed and roll-to-roll inkjet printer to Tango Visuals based in Victoria.

“Print and sign specialists are looking to diversify,” said Ashley. “Businesses that specialise in installation, or exhibitions and displays, are looking to bring the new technology in-house to expand the services they can offer. At our new demonstration centre, we can show business owners the benefits this technology can deliver.”

And those benefits, and much more, can be seen at the new Currie Group Sydney demonstration centre. To visit the centre and see the latest print technology, just give the Currie Group Sydney offices a call on t: 02 9889 0104 or visit the website at www.curriegroup.com.au

    November 22 2023

Melbourne’s Tiger Corp needed to improve competitiveness and production – particularly for Braille and wayfinding signage – they turned to Total Image Supplies who had previously installed there smaller Mutoh XpertJet 661UF UV-LED Flatbed device. Upon the release of Mutoh’s new XpertJet 1462UF UV-LED Flatbed Printer, the company could see it would be perfect for its growth plans, and ordered it immediately, becoming Australia’s first user of the technology.

Located in the tiger territory of Richmond, Tiger Corp is a provider of a broad array of retail, business, building, construction & architectural signage solutions. With over 130-year history in Melbourne, Australia Tiger Corp have always been ahead of the curve and innovation by investing in the latest and best technology available.

We live in a digital world, custom signage with a quick turnaround a main growth area. Flatbed UV with high media printability is the best way to achieve this, printing objects, braille signage and more with inks that cure hard and are durable. Tiger Corp invested in Mutoh XpertJet 661UF A2 UV-LED Flatbed Printer from Total Image Supplies a few years ago to focus on small format Braille tactile signs. The experience with this device was only positive and demand for higher productivity meant either considering a second machine or looking for a larger format more versatile solution.

When Mutoh announced the XpertJet 1462UF at FESPA Global Print Expo, Munich in May 2023, it immediately caught Tiger Corp’s attention. Here was a unique UV-LED production printer based off already successful technology capable of printing at double the speed and up to 150mm in height on an extended print area of 1420mm x 700mm. Additionally, it featured white & varnish ink for printing specialty finishes and full blockout on coloured and clear media.

Larry Sbisa, Tiger Corp Director says: “As per the smaller Mutoh printer, we were attracted to the quality of its output but also the ease of operation. Also, the ability to print raised text was vital for our Braille Tactile sign production.”

When Total Image Supplies were able to deliver the new XpertJet 1462UF in September, Tiger Corp placed an order immediately and became the first such installation in Australia – and indeed the Southern hemisphere. “We had operated other machines for many years before discovering Mutoh and it has proven to be an excellent choice. We have found Total Image Supplies and Mutoh Australia excellent to deal with, both are very responsive and knowledgeable,” says Sbisa, adding: “We are gradually moving into other markets such as retail, medical etc. Without the new Mutoh 1462UF, we have been uncompetitive for quick-short-run retail signs and expect to be able to secure more work in that space now that it is up and running, producing beautiful work.

“Based on our experience to date, we would definitely recommend these Mutoh printers and the services we get from Total Image Supplies.”

Tyson Buechler, Director Total Image Supplies comments, the Mutoh 1462UF came to market at the perfect time with many existing clients needing faster production speeds, larger bed size, all with the same reliability and unique features the Mutoh 661UF offered.

With the 1462UF now featuring dual print heads, a larger bed, and the ability to print up to 150mm thickness in CMYK plus white & varnish. We have found the Mutoh 1462UF to be a hot-ticket item and very in-demand printer for various markets such as braille and tactile signage, bespoke & niche signage, promotional print, homeware & display.”

Buechler adds: “We have already seen further sales of the device and are very excited about bringing this unique award-winning printer to the wider Australian print markets.

About the award-winning Mutoh XpertJet 1462UF

Immediately after being released the Mutoh XpertJet 1462UF UV-LED Flatbed Printer won the USA Pinnacle Product award in the UV / Latex Flatbed (under USD$70K category).

Based on the extraordinary success of the smaller format XpertJet 461UF (A3+) and 661UF(A2+) printers, the new 1462UF is a B1++ printer with extra width to enable more ‘n-up’ printing of media and objects. It features:

    • 1420mm x 700mm Print Area
    • 0-150mm Print Thickness
    • Braille and raised data capability.
    • Staggered Piezo Printheads with Automated Nozzle Checking
    • Local Dimming Control of UV lamps for Matte, Semi-Gloss and Gloss effects in one pass

Automating repetitive tasks saves time and reduces errors. It also allows your prepress operators to focus on added value operations – their real expertise – with operator independent consistency in file handling, naming and storage.

As each CERM partner integration has a context of its own, we have carefully reviewed the CERM-Esko partner integration in all its dimensions, and we recognize the depth and quality of this automated workflow solution. And therefore, awarding it the CERM quality label.

The CERM Premium Integration Partner label serves as a badge of assurance, signifying that both parties deliver high-quality results through a proven and trusted solution – naturally - without creating any unfair advantage or bias within the industry.

Known for its innovative digital die-cutting solutions, Intec Printing Solutions Limited, releases the ColorCut FB1180-T Tangential Flatbed Cutter.

ColorCut FB1180-T. Large format digital flatbed cutter for prototype and light production work.

The FB1180-T offers 2 working modes; DIRECT – using Intec’s industry acclaimed ColorCut Pro software direct from a PC or HELD mode (standalone operation) where jobs can be stored internally on the cutter or from a USB stick, so anyone can cut sheets placed on the flatbed! Simply place the flatbed at any point of a production environment, click SCAN on the 7" touch screen and run!

All Intec cutters offer instant job processing when reading a QR code and page marks printed on a sheet. However, this is no longer necessary with a fantastic new feature now included on the FB1180-T; page edge detection. Page edge detection enables processing of printed jobs, from the rear of the sheet where there are no QR codes or page merks printed - producing accurate cutting and creasing every time.

Terri Winstanley, Intec marketing manager, “The FB1180-T is a very exciting leap forward for our digital cutter range. This model is the first of a series of cutters to offer a new 4 tool head that includes tangential tools, for deeper cutting and creasing of thicker substrates. It also hosts the new high-powered controller and expanded graphics interface that will be seen on all our digital die- cutters.”

Amazing performance, ease of operation, and an affordable price make the NEW FB1180-T the leader of the pack.

Introducing the new FB1180-T B1+ tangential digital die cutter. It is precise enough for kiss cut labels yet powerful enough for flutedboards, and a diverse range of media in-between!

Sporting a new 4 tool head, the digital flatbed cutter is perfect for on demand prototype pieces and light production runs, cutting and creasing up to 3mm thick media. The new quad tool head includes 2 passive contour/drag cut and crease tools PLUS 2 active tangential tools using a new deep cutting tangential blade and tangential crease wheel. The operator just needs to select the right tools for the job in hand.

    November 07 2023

Roland DG Corporation (Headquarters: Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan; President, Representative Director: Kohei Tanabe), a global manufacturer and distributor of wide-format inkjet printers for advertising and signage and 3D tools for manufacturing, announced today that it officially commenced operations at its new head office on November 1, 2023. The relocation involved consolidating its previous head office and Miyakoda office, both located in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka.

The new head office enables employees to choose their workspace from four distinct areas: “Concentration,” “Share,” “Communication,” and “Creation.” These areas are designed to foster idea generation and enhance communication among employees. Additionally, the office features private booths suitable for remote meetings and promoting diverse work styles tailored to specific needs. It also includes training rooms and shower facilities, supporting employees in achieving a healthy work-life balance.

    Environmentally-Conscious Office

The new office is equipped with solar power generation facilities on the rooftop and high-efficiency air conditioning units, earning it a “Nearly ZEB” certification. Aligned with global efforts for carbon neutrality, the office achieved a 75% reduction in primary energy consumption through a combination of energy conservation and creation. In consideration of the high seismic risk of the region during a Nankai Trough earthquake, the building’s seismic resilience exceeds the national standard by 1.5 times. Emergency generators are also installed, ensuring employee safety and business continuity during a crisis.

Comment by Kohei Tanabe, President, Representative Director of Roland DG Corporation

“As we celebrate our 42nd anniversary and the completion of our new office building, we extend our gratitude to our customers, employees, their families, and all those associated with our company. The completion of our new office fills us with great excitement. The division of workspaces allows for efficient work in environments tailored to specific purposes. With changes in work styles and environments, sparked in part by COVID-19, employee mindsets have also evolved. Our new office not only serves as a place for work but also brings to life our company’s purpose of ‘Empowering Creativity and Excitement Worldwide.’ We look forward to integrating diverse perspectives and sharing this excitement from Hamamatsu to the world.”

Roland DG will continue to provide innovative digital solutions from its new head office, offering people around the world the amazement and joy of creation, as well as the wow and excitement that result from it.

    November 07 2023

For the third time, swissQprint invited all users around the globe to join the Creative Challenge. Now the winners of this community competition have been announced.

swissQprint organised a worldwide competition within the swissQprint user community in spring 2023. Customers from all five continents took up the challenge and submitted 60 works. Judging was done by an internal swissQprint jury and two external experts: together they were looking for originality, while also including process and print-related considerations. The public, too, had three weeks in which to cast their votes online. Now the winners are known:

1st place: Haas Werbetechnik of Austria with “Symphony of creation”, a unique composition of highly varied materials and printing techniques: metallic effects, droptix, white, UV varnish and 3D relief printing. Having already won the previous swissQprint Creative Challenge in 2019, Haas Werbetechnik successfully defended its pole position.

2nd place: CMP Enseigne of France with “Woodstar”, a truly spectacular work of art. Transparent areas, droptix and lenticular printing, relief and metallic effects, plus clever use of varnish together create a stunning display.

3rd place: Gcolor Company Ltd. of Taiwan with “Alice Immersiveland”. Lenticular printing is the secret to fairytale-like transformation of the image; additional printed relief completes the magic.

4th place: Signaletik Diffusion of France with «Le couteau swissQprint», a detailed replica of a Swiss Army knife, ornamented with relief elements. Various designs impart a distinctive look to each one of the tools.

5th place: Take Corporation of Japan with “Funny Moving Poster”, a test piece for an engaging shop window display. Rotating patterns draw attention to the product.

The winners – a delegation from Haas Werbetechnik – will be travelling to swissQprint’s factory in Kriessern, Switzerland. Second to fifth placed winners are being rewarded with generous prizes.

This is the third time swissQprint has held the competition: first in 2016, then in 2019 and now this year. Adriano Gut, Key Account Manager at swissQprint, says about the Challenge: “Again, we marvelled at our customers’ ingenuity, creativity and skill; they make the seemingly impossible happen.” A gallery displaying all the works will shortly go live on www.swissqprint.com.

  • + Epson Wins 2023 Good Design Awards

Epson has won several 2023 Good Design Awards for its products. The awards are presented for designs that benefit and enrich people's lives and society in general.

    October 31 2023

Epson has won several 2023 Good Design Awards for its products. The awards are presented for designs that benefit and enrich people's lives and society in general.

Epson’s award-winning products include the following:

Business Inkjet Printers: WorkForce Enterprise LM-C4000, 5000 and 6000 (known as WorkForce AM-C4000, 5000 and 6000 in A/NZ).

These high-speed A3 inkjet printers are intended for medium-sized to large offices. These inkjets don't use heat to fire ink* and therefore consume less power than laser equivalents.

    WorkForce AM-C4000

Together with a simple structure that saves resources, these printers are designed to minimise environmental impact. The exterior is white, clean, rounded and unimposing.Reasons given for the awardThe multifunction printers in this class are sophisticated products that can be equipped with various options. They earned high marks for their graceful body design, including gentle form and rounded corners that suggest the smaller environmental footprint of the inkjet system. We felt that the ink cartridge window may play a supporting role in printer operation rather than being a differentiator with competitive products. We hope that in future the design of optional units such as finishers and paper feeding units will be harmonised with the body design.

Compact Photo Printers for Business: SL-D500 SeriesThese compact photo printers for commercial use can be installed efficiently in stores. They feature a lightweight and compact body size and frontal operation allowing them to be installed on narrow shelves or counters. They also have a box design that allows up to three units to be installed on top of each other. In addition to the compactness of the body, the large-capacity ink tank model contributes to lowering environmental impact by reducing consumables and waste.

    SL-D550 (known as the D560 in A/NZ)

Reasons given for the awardThese are special printers designed for shops around town offering photo printing services. All necessary operations can be completed entirely from the front panel, and multiple units can be combined side by side in compact configurations inside stores. These printers look like simple, ordinary cubes at first glance, but space is at a premium in tiny, specialised shops offering photo printing services and designs like this can be expected to save a considerable amount of space.

Garment Printers: SureColor SC-F2200 SeriesThese garment printers can directly print onto t-shirts and other clothes. The compact design of these printers makes them easier to install, expand and transport. Epson has also changed the design of the operating unit, which contributes to reduced downtime and improved productivity. Epson hopes that the product helps contribute to the digitalisation of the textile printing industry.

    SC-F2250 (known as the SC-F2260 in A/NZ)

Reasons given for the awardEpson revamped the design of its previous garment printer in response to feedback from its users. They reduced the depth of the unit and made installation space more compact. The SC-F2250 (known as the SC-F2260 in A/NZ)is now the standard model in the garment printer series.

The high performance and roundness give a sense of intelligence combined with the beautifully arranged details to produce an attractive appearance. Furthermore, the easily operable controls, movable parts, and top transparent cover are uniformly black on a white-tone background. This fully expresses a brand identity rooted in usability and gives the impression of reliability and advanced technology over the entire series. In addition, we also appreciated that the software is provided with well-organised graphics that are easy to use, with no PC knowledge required.

    October 31 2023

At Kala, we know that finishing is an essential step in graphics’ production and a way to generate more profit for the shop owners. Teaching and training is crucial in a more and more competitive environment.

"We are proud to have entered into this partnership with HP, as we are convinced that our large-format laminator is a valuable asset for any wrap shops and all distributors. Mistral 1650 is compatible with this latest range of printers, enabling latex to be laminated straight off the press. This means no bubbles, orange peel effect or blisters. At room temperature and with no lag time, the result is optimal," says Patrick Marillier, Managing Director of Kala

A concept shared by Johan Spies, Product Manager, Mid Volume Printing, at HP EMEA, who says:  “ In the HP Graphics Experience Centre in Barcelona, we strive to bring the best out of our HP Latex printers and combining it with the best finishing solutions.  We are very pleased to have the Kala Mistral 1650 laminator next to our HP Latex printers to be able to show and demonstrate the total solution to our customers. By showcasing possible workflows in our HP Graphics Experience Centre, we are now able to advise them the best possible solutions for their applications.”

A promising commercial development for Kala's "waste free laminator". A guarantee of quality and functionality, the French brand's flagship product has made all the difference. Johan Spies says: “The reason for choosing the Kala Mistral 1650 for our HP Graphics Experience Centre, is due to the ease of operation and the short time needed to set it up. This adds perfectly to the way we work and design our HP Latex products. On top, it has a small footprint, consistence quality and versatility of laminating rigid and flexible materials for a large range of applications. Overall, we are very pleased of having the great addition of the Kala Mistral 1650 laminator for our HP Latex printers in our HP Graphics Experience Centre in Barcelona.

For the short term we have multiple demos per week where customers come to Barcelona to see and work with the wide range of technologies, we have available. On the medium term we are scheduling seminars and events where we also show the laminating process with the Kala Mistral 1650 as being part of one of the many workflow solutions we are covering today in our HP Graphics Experience Centre in Barcelona.”

In Australia, Celmac sell the Kala range of finishing equipment including laminators, XY cutters, and mounting tables.
