New Xerox Press Prints Specialty Embellishments in One Pass

Xerox has announced a new a high-speed, six-station digital colour press that combines four-colour printing with up to two specialty dry inks in one printing pass. Called the Xerox Iridesse Production Press, it can print metallic gold or silver dry ink, CMYK and clear dry ink in a single pass.

“Iridesse can do things no other digital production press can do, but it’s what it can do for our customers that’s most important,” says Ragni Mehta, VP and GM of Xerox's Cut Sheet Business. “We created the press to produce these special effects and digital enhancements cost effectively and in a simplified workflow so our customers can seize the market opportunity and grow their businesses.”

With two inline specialty dry ink stations, the Iridesse lets customers create lucrative applications with spot colours, metallic and mixed metallic gradients, and specialty enhancements. Gold and silver dry metallic inks can be used on their own or layered under or over CMYK to create unique iridescent palettes. A layer of clear dry ink can be added for an extra touch of dimension or texture.

Xerox FreeFlow Core’s pre-built workflows enable print providers to automatically and selectively transform text and graphics for printing gold and silver without editing the source documents.

Printing at speeds up to 120 ppm, the press can run stocks from 52 -400 gsm. The High Definition Emulsion Aggregate (HD EA) Toner process results in the optimal particle size to deliver lower gloss, smooth tints and fine detail more consistently.

Two Dual Advanced High Capacity Feeders, Bypass and Inserter options let customers run up to eight different stocks in a single job, or do production runs with a total of 12,500 sheets. The Xerox EX-P 6 Print Server by Fiery enables customers to create customised workflows for metallic applications with advanced RIP capabilities and colour management tools.

Primera Technology has launched its RX500 Colour RFID label and tag printer.

RX500 is the world’s only full-colour RFID on-demand RFID label and tag printer. Labels are encoded, verified and printed in a single pass. Finished labels are then cut with the internal guillotine-style cutter and dispensed one at a time. On-demand printing makes the printer ideal for applications such as visitor or trade show badges where just a single label at a time with unique information is required. Batches of many labels or tags at a time can also be encoded and printed.

The built-in UHF RFID reader/encoder module is supplied by Honeywell. It is compliant with EPC Global Gen 2 Class 1 and ISO 18000 –b and –c specifications for the widest range of deployments in real-world applications.

Print resolution is up to 4800 dpi with print speeds of up to 2.5 inch (63.5 mm) per second. A single full-color ink cartridge is utilized for ease of replacement in the field.

'Printing full-color RFID labels and tags adds a new, value-added feature to the technology,’ said Mark D. Strobel, Primera’s vice president of sales and marketing. ‘With RX500, you can add color coding, graphics and high-resolution photos to RFID labels and tags. With color, you’re essentially adding an extra layer of accuracy and safety in applications such as medical file folder labels, visitor badges, photo wristbands and specimen tracking labels.’

Supported substrates include matte and gloss inkjet papers, vinyl, polypropylene and polyester. A high-degree of water, smudge and smear-resistance is achieved through advanced, third-generation dye-based inks and the print surfaces of inkjet labels such as Primera’s TuffCoat microporous labels. Most popular UHF inlays from major RFID companies can be encoded.

Ricoh Unveils New Pro C9200 Series Sheetfed Colour Digital Presses

Ricoh USA, Inc. has unveiled additions to its Commercial & Industrial Printing Business Group portfolio that set a new standard for best-in-class price performance in its category. The RICOH Pro C9200 and C9210 Graphic Arts Editions provide an affordable, predictable way for businesses to maximize revenue due to its uptime and reliability. Ricoh’s latest strategic investment empowers customers to expand into new markets with the ability to produce book jackets, six-page brochures and other unique applications that require media of up to 470 gsm.

“When our customers speak, we listen. They challenged us to deliver a press that increases productivity and reliability. The RICOH Pro C9200 series does just that at a price performance never before seen,” said John Fulena, Vice President, Commercial & Industrial Printing Business Group, Ricoh USA, Inc. “We are redefining the value printers should expect from their presses, even in the most demanding production environments. These are among the most productive sheet-fed presses yet, and they are a direct result of listening to our customers and making strategic investments to help them deliver exceptional customer experiences.”

    RICOH Pro C9200

Printers looking to increase uptime, reliability and utilization will see immediate benefits from the RICOH Pro C9200 series. The presses support up to 470 gsm and have the capacity to run the longest paper lengths in the market today: 49 inches simplex and 40 inches auto-duplex. This enables the production of more advanced applications and the ability to drive down the cost per piece. Additionally, the series supports a laser resolution of 2,400x4,800 dpi with a large color gamut without sacrificing speed or versatility.
The RICOH Pro C9200 series also produces consistent, professional output due to its in-line sensors that automatically aid improved front-to-back registration and color calibration, without requiring advanced operator skills. Moreover, the larger 17 inch Smart Operation Panel brings new job- and workflow-management options directly to the device, on a single screen, including the ability to monitor and manage print jobs remotely through either an EFI Color Controller or the RICOH TotalFlow Server.
Both the RICOH Pro C9200 and C9210 are ENERGY STAR certified and carry an EPEAT Silver rating.

    May 10 2018

Wellington (New Zealand)-headquartered Gravure Packaging (GPL) has been named the printer of the world’s best gravure process label in 2017 by the L9 group of international label associations.

A shrink sleeve produced for a Chobani yoghurt 170g tub saw GPL win the Gravure Class in the L9’s prestigious World Label Awards (WLA) competition, which is colloquially known as the “technical Oscars of the global label industry”.

Winning in this competition is highly valued throughout the global label fraternity, signalling that the printer has achieved real excellence, explains judging panel chair Tony White.

“Never will a label have been examined in such detail, even by a quality control department,” says Mr White.

“We expect a high standard of printing at this level and we also look for the quality of the design of the label.”

During a recent visit to GPL’s Fitzherbert Street plant, MP for Hutt South Chris Bishop said he was impressed by the operation and to learn the firm is both an exporter as well as supplier to another accomplished local enterprise, in Whittaker’s Chocolates.

“Hearty congratulations to GPL -- a real Hutt success story,” says MP Bishop.

“I’m proud to represent an area in Parliament with so many award-winning businesses, of which GPL is just the latest. Well done to the staff of this fantastic and world-class Petone company.”

GPL managing director Greg Chapman says the WLA award is “great recognition” of the development work invested in improving the firm’s print quality as well as its capabilities to solve what were quite technical challenges in this particular job.

“We’ve worked with Chobani for a few years now, they have very precise standards and we love delivering great looking shrink sleeves for them,” he says.

Mr Chapman says the Melbourne-based yoghurt manufacturer is “very focused” on producing the highest quality product which nicely aligns with GPL’s own culture.

“Chobani’s range of yoghurts taste great and the highly-detailed graphic work needs gravure quality print to really make the labels pop.”

In order to be considered for entry to the WLA competition, a printer’s label must first have won an award in its local association’s competition -- entries from individual printers are not accepted.

“This shrink sleeve in fact won two Gold Medals at the New Zealand Pride In Print Awards last year, including the Gravure Category. The New Zealand label association SALMA selected it as the sole submission it was permitted to make in the WLA Gravure Class for the year.”

Mr Chapman adds that the WLA award win came over “truly international competition”.

“Labels are submitted from around the world including Europe, the United States, Japan, India, China, Australia and New Zealand. The second-placed entry in our class was a Heineken label from the United Kingdom.

“We are aware the WLA’s panel of international judges spend a considerable time examining and debating the technical and aesthetic features of each label, including converting and finishing technology.”

New Zealand ranked second-equal with the United States in recording five WLA Class Awards this year, only being superseded by Japan with eight. When adding in Honourable Mentions, New Zealand finished in third place overall with eight awards in total behind Japan (ten) and Europe (nine).

    April 21 2018

Esko has announced a new release of its packaging management solution, WebCenter. WebCenter 18 streamlines and speeds up the packaging development workflow by delivering extra features that give brand owners and converters more control and visibility of their packaging preproduction specification, approval and project life cycle.

When CMO Council asked packaging professionals how long it takes to make a packaging change, they reported that changes take an average of about 198 days. Marketing leaders think it takes 90 days or less, but consumers don’t understand why packaging changes and other physical media can’t be made in one day. WebCenter 18 helps its users to get much closer to that one-day standard.

The review and approval process with WebCenter has been improved, enabling more visibility into project status and reviewer input. With WebCenter 18, brand owners now understand the root causes of any bottlenecks, as it now captures the reasons for rejection and the number of approval iterations, allowing for ongoing process improvement. It can also automatically involve the right stakeholder after a rejection, speeding up the revision process.

What’s more, reviewers can now review the product exactly as it would be on the shelf. This improves the accuracy of the review feedback and so further reduce approval times and number of iterations. The 3D packaging models can then also be used to clearly communicate internally, but also to populate and market with retailers and consumers online.

WebCenter 18 content management now includes built-in and custom templates, so users efficiently comply with regulations such as Nutrition Fact Tables and Over the Counter Drug Facts. The Graphic Content Management functionality allows brand owners to centralize artwork data, and merging it into templates, including the logging of symbols, logos and bar codes, as well as packaging copy and graphics. These elements must be perfect for branding and regulatory compliance, and this process completely removes manual processes that lead to mistakes. Translations within and outside of the system can be managed systematically, as well.

The new WebCenter is designed to give converters an edge by including exactly those new features that give them valuable insights into their processes. Capturing data around the number of approval iterations and the reasons for rejections are two examples of how WebCenter 18 uncovers bottlenecks and root causes of delays in the process. These insights provide a basis for continuous improvement of the processes to further speed up turnaround times.

WebCenter 18 also comes with a social media-like instant messaging function, which can be utilized inside the context of a specific project. All communication is therefore stored inside the project for full traceability and transparency. This further streamlines communication between stakeholders and results in a greater reduction of errors and increased efficiency.

In addition, reviewers now review the product exactly as it would be on the shelf. This 3D review process significantly reduces approval time and iterations and lets converters catch more errors.

Deploying in only five days delivers immediate business impact after The “QuickStart” versions of WebCenter are available to allow organizations to implement the tool in less than five days with proven and expert workflows ready to use. This way, the “QuickStart” versions deliver instant benefits in project management, data management, the approval process and data automation.

“Packaging is an ever more important part of almost all consumer goods, from food to electronics, and it plays an even greater role as consumer awareness and demand increases. WebCenter is already the leading packaging management platform used by Fortune 500 companies that are active in the CPG and pharma industries, as well as converters and packaging printers. The feedback from our early users has been overwhelmingly positive. With this new version, Esko has the most powerful solution that ties the entire supply chain together,” says Udo Panenka, president of Esko.

    April 21 2018

What state-of-the-art technologies are available for adding security features to ID documents to make them counterfeit-proof? This question was the focus of the second Security Printing Day held by Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) at the Wiesloch-Walldorf site. It was attended by around 120 customers from all over the world as well as representatives from government agencies like the German Federal Criminal Police Office. “If public officials want to recognize counterfeits, they need to know what is and isn’t technically possible today,” explains Joachim Hüber, Product Manager, Security Printing Applications, at Heidelberg. The visitors learned about the latest trends and the best methods at present in workshops, seminars, and directly at a six-color Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 75 designed specifically for security printing.

    Security printing with growth potential

The risk of counterfeits of all kinds is growing in the age of the Internet and the resulting easier access to technologies. Government agencies and manufacturers of sensitive documents therefore place great value on maximum security for unequivocal identification of the holders of these documents. ID documents like identity cards, passports, or drivers’ licenses as well as staff badges and admission tickets for sporting events and concerts are therefore becoming more and more complex in their structure and design. While security printing may be a niche for the print media industry, these signs point to it offering good potential and substantial growth rates.

Intensive cooperation with numerous partner companies is important

Not only banknotes and securities, but also identity cards, drivers’ licenses, and the like feature numerous and very different security features today. Most of these documents are based on plastic cards consisting of several components in the check card format of 86 x 54 millimeters. Adding security features like holograms, very fine lines and writing, or imprints requires a wide variety of competencies from a range of different specialists. “Printing competency” is just one of these. Heidelberg as one of the world’s leading providers of systems and components for security printing therefore traditionally works very closely with highly specialized partner companies. Around a dozen of them were involved in the Security Day with their own presentations. These partners offer technology for all stages of the value chain, from prepress to press to postpress.

“Not just the technologies themselves, but also the counterfeiters are always improving,” says Product Manager Joachim Hüber. “That’s why we and our partners always need to be one step ahead of them with our ideas, competencies, technologies, and solutions.”

    April 16 2018

Clegg Media was commissioned by GPY&R Brisbane to print and install a large aeroplane wrap as part of the Tatts Powerball 25 million promotional campaign in December 2016. The brief was to make the plane appear to be covered in Christmas wrapping paper complete with a giant bow and gift tag, without leaving any glue residue or damaging the plane.

A great deal of pre planning was involved to ensure all aspects of the project were completed effectively. Measurements were taken of the Alliance Airlines Fokker 70 and templates made to ensure precise trimming of the banners.

The plane wrap was printed on Clegg Media’s large format HP Scitex XP5500 Industrial Printer on a light weight banner stock. The wrap took 12 hours to print.

To avoid leaving glue residue or damaging the existing graphics on the plane a low tack self adhesive vinyl was applied to the underside of the plane, the banners were then attached to the self adhesive vinyl. The gift tag was directly printed to foam core in 2 separate pieces on Clegg Media’s hi resolution Titan UV printer and joined together on site.

The plane was installed inside a hanger at Brisbane Airport. The install took 4 people, 3 days to complete and the removal was done by 3 people in 6 hours the following day. The plane was then towed and positioned at an aerobridge for viewing by incoming and outgoing passengers. Promotional photos and video for TV coverage were taken by GPY&R Brisbane.

The whole project was managed by Barry Clegg, General Manager Clegg Media. Clegg Media is a proud Queensland family owned company founded in 1996 and is one of the leading media production suppliers in it’s market. We are committed to ongoing innovation, supplying customers with the latest advice and services offered in large format printing technology.

Mutoh Australia is pleased to announce the Australian launch of 2 new UV printers, the VJ-1638UH and the VJ626-UF, at the Visual Impact show in Brisbane this week. “I’m very pleased to be launching both these new printers at the Visual Impact Brisbane show” Mutoh GM, Russell Cavenagh said.

“For companies looking to expand their business into UV printing the new 1.6M wide VJ-1638UH LED UV hybrid is an ideal fit. Capable of printing on roll and rigid medias the 1.6M wide VJ-1638UH is the ideal printer for companies making this step. With its long-life ‘cool’ LED lamps and excellent ink adhesion the 1638UH is a very versatile printer and can print on a wide variety of substrates up to 15mm thick and rigid medias up to 1.6M wide.”

“For promotional companies the new VJ-626UF LED-UV printer is a highly versatile and productive unit with its large bed size (594 x 483mm) and the ability to print ‘in the round’ with the optional rotary unit for cylindrical items.”

See both new printers being demonstrated on the Mutoh stand C10 at the Brisbane Convention Centre or contact Russell Cavenagh russell_cavenagh@mutoh-au.com at Mutoh Australia on 1300 4MUTOH for more information.

Currie Group has announced it will be bringing its mobile showroom to Stand A28 at Visual Impact in Brisbane next week, giving visitors to the show a VIP preview of its latest technology Roadshow on what will be the show’s largest stand by a country mile.

Currie Group is well known for its innovative Roadshows, trucking the latest technology around the country to provide print service providers with hands-on access to the very latest technologies.

Now, Visual Impact visitors will have the opportunity to see its latest iteration, which showcases inline automated booklet production via the innovative combination of an HP Indigo 7900 Digital Press with a Horizon 200 series booklet maker.

The combo, which made its world debut at PacPrint 2017 in Melbourne last year, delivers true ‘end-to-end’ productivity and solutions and is a perfect illustration of automated printing – a theme which is underscored by the company’s eye-catching Robot, which will also be on the mobile showroom.

“The Horizon booklet maker takes the sheets from the HP Indigo and, in one operation, stitches, folds and trims, to deliver a finished product onto the conveyor at the far end, all without a single touch point,” explains Currie Group Sales & Marketing Director, Phillip Rennell.

The setup, which Rennell admits only fits into the specially modified truck ‘by the width of a sheet of paper’, will provide an interesting addition to the diverse range of technology on show at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.

It will be complemented by a range of finishing equipment – Horizon RD-4055 rotary die-cutting system, Horizon SmartSlitter sheet cutter and creaser, Horizon CRF-362 creaser and folder, Foliant Mercury 400SF laminator, which will be set up on the apron in front of the mobile showroom.

The company’s involvement at Visual Impact made sense, says Rennell, particularly given that the company is about to kick off another major Roadshow from outside the company’s showroom in Queensland’s sunny capital on 2 and 3 May, before heading South to Albury and Adelaide.

“We have a long association with VI, so we know the value of the show and its importance to the industry,” he said. “Given that our next Roadshow event will start outside our Brisbane showroom early next month, VI Brisbane was the perfect opportunity for us to give some of the industry’s key decision makers a look at technology many of them may not have had the opportunity to see at PacPrint, while also kicking off the Roadshow.”

Visual Impact will open its doors next Thursday, 19 April, and run from 10am till 6pm on Thursday and Friday, and from 10am until 4pm on Saturday 21st. To skip the queues, register online or for more information about the show, go to the Visual Connections website.
